it was ok
bookshelves: teen-girls, mystery

Bauer has written some wonderful books, which makes “Peeled” all the more disappointing. When I first saw the cover, I was reminded of “Squashed,” her excellent small-town teen farmer’s tale. The setting and some of the sentiment may be similar, but don’t be fooled. This book, in comparison, is overripe and underwhelming.

It’s a bit misleading to label “Peeled” a mystery, because the disguise is so thin. The bad guys are all impossibly obvious and slimy and incompetent. And the hard-working good guys of Happy Apple Valley are all pure and brave and unstoppable.

There’s a few OK emotional sidelights, but as soon as the writing veers back to the main plot line, everything weakens again. The greatest mystery may be how Bauer managed to stretch “Peeled” past the first chapter.
