This is why I almost never EVER see the movie before I read the book. I wonder what I would have thought of the book if I'd read it before. As it is, I think it pales in comparison. It's good enough on its own, and I enjoyed it a lot, it's just difficult to see what was so amazing about it that people WANTED to turn it into a movie.

Really, it's quite a nice little story. The plot itself is interesting (although the going is a bit sporadic), but the characters are woefully underdeveloped and have very little arc throughout the storyline at all. The romance between the two main characters is so subtle and understated that it hardly seems substantial or of any interest at all. I didn't find any underlying themes or motifs to tie it all together, but the writing was elegant and beautiful and exquisite.

At the end of it all, it was fun and pretty but I really just didn't care.
