I can't believe I'm only giving a JJ McAvoy book 4 stars but it couldn't be helped. To say that this book was highly anticipated by me would be an understatement. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my high expectations.
Maybe they were too high you say? No. Absolutely not. Ms. McAvoy has lulled me, with her prowess of the written word, into a false sense of security, a state in which she could do no wrong. IMO, everything she touches turns to gold. Chick's got that Midas touch. However, this book... this Book... THIS BOOK right here felt unfinished and I just don't understand it. I was fooled by the glitter only to realize it's gold-plated.
I fell in love with Eli and Gwen when all I knew was the preview of a chapter. The book wasn't even finished being written and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. When I got to the end, I continued to flip the pages in disbelief. That couldn't be it?! No epilogue at least?! I wanted MORE!! I wanted to see how Eli and Gwen navigated through their relationship a little bit longer and how they bonded with Sophia. I got none of that. Not even a teaser. Even the timeline of the story was a little bit wonky. I'm still not sure exactly how long these two knew each other. So to say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
One thing that I admire about Ms. McAvoy is that no two sets of her books are alike. Each story is unique, refreshing, and told in such a way that each character is real if not realistic. This book was no different. I loved the development of Eli and Gwen's relationship. It went from grief and embarrassment, to resentment, to annoyance, to courtesy, to reluctant friendship that blossomed into true friendship, to finally finding love with one another.
I'm not saying this story wasn't great, because it was. I'm just upset that it feels incomplete.
At least there was a silver lining in all of this, which was the teaser for A Bloody Kingdom. I'm super excited to read this and July 14th can't come fast enough for me. Her Ruthless People series is by far one of my favourite series of all time!!
Enjoy! xo
