I don't get the title, because, writer-worshipfully and culturally, this seemed pretty dude-centric, even with the chapters focusing on the chicks Nora Barnacle (whose chapter seemed to have the specter of James Joyce lurking all around, even though that chapter is totally a four-star read and worth the price of the book, which I checked out from the library) and Maud Gonne (who still outshines William Yeats, even though "[i]t was Yeats who brought Gonne to the Golden Dawn"). Even the writer herself frames so much of her travelogue in terms of lovers, guys at the bar, and one-night stands.

That being said, I liked this. I liked this more than Kate Bollick's Spinster: Making a Life of One's Own, which weirdly seems a natural comparison to this book: single white ladies contemplating marriage while doing their own thing and self-introspection not really acknowledging their privilege (specifically whiteness) or the privilege (specifically whiteness) of the individuals they profile. However, whereas Bollick was all about the white feminists along the Atlantic, Crispin's memoir/historical biographies book seems to go somewhere, perhaps because she is literally writing about different white people in different European locations. Anyway, this wasn't a bad read, but I don't fault readers who see this as just another "white writer bumming around Europe and trying to capture the essence of dead other white writers' lives" memoir.
