** spoiler alert ** A brilliant and disturbing book about an alien invasion that comes with no clear aggressor and no clear motivation. In a sense the story is really about the reaction of the world to the sheer bleak horror on the Unknown and the Unknowable. There is a definite hard sci-fi bent to the story, as the dismantling of the earth is described achingly slow and beautiful detail. A certain character in the book succumbs to leukemia. This fatal descent becomes the mirror reflection--in microcosm--of the death pangs of the planet itself throughout the later chapters. There is hope in the book, as different factions of Outsiders intervene (or attempt to) in the planetary destruction. There is also a deep philosophy herein, included with the heartbreak and loss. Highly recommended.
