Paula Hebert an easily read novel of the civil war, jacobs ladder is written from the perspective of the individual men, women and slaves of virginia, and conveys a deep understanding of their thoughts and feelings as the war plays out. there are a few war segments, but even these are written from the view of the common soldier, and in so doing, the desperation, anguish and pathos are that much more real. this book is a great way to touch the soul of the time.
