Never really got drawn into the characters or the novel. All the admiration for their extended family members with nauseating endless descriptions of how beautiful and accomplished everyone was bordered on incestuous and not at all believable. There were tender moments that touched me so I kept reading. I really wanted more information on the social issues of the time period with the Kennedy assasination and the closing of the borders in East Germany and threat of nuclear war through the perception of regular people but the issues were too spread out and too many to be covered in depth. Won't be looking for a sequel.
