Wow. Just...wow. I could have rated this book anything. The plot is intense enough on its own, but has several subplots, and an ending that completely shocked me. And I do mean COMPLETELY. As in, you should read the book again with that perspective and look back on everything that seems obvious now that you missed the first time.
Cara and Zoe are best friends. Zoe runs away from her home, and Cara is delighted to see her after so many years. Zoe decides she's going to hide out in Cara's room (yes, this isn't the most realistic thing in the world, you'd think, but it all makes sense in the end) to avoid going back home. Cara allows this, because she's desperate for her friend (she has none at her school). But just as soon as Zoe arrives, Cara's archenemies (aka, the girl who bullies her at her high school) drowns in a pool. A while later, Cara befriends a boy who she likes (this IS high school we're talking about, so of course there's a boy), and Zoe feels rejected. And she gets mad. Cara fears Zoe will leave, and tries desperately to balance her real life along with her life at home, hiding Zoe. When Cara starts spending more time with Ethan, another mean girl disappears (she just happens to be Ethan's girlfriend). I'm sure you can guess what happens to her.
This book is really intense. I had to put it down and read one of those awful "What Would You Do?" books to get my mind off something less dark. But, despite the intensity of this book, it's good. Really, really good. It's gripping, and definitely twists everything upside down. The ending is a little scary, and definitely a surprise. I'd definitely suggest this book if you're a fan of drama, a mystery, and a gripping book with excellent writing. But be warned: everything is definitely not what it seems.
