This historical fiction tells the love saga between John of Gaunt (Duke of Lancaster) and his mistress, Katherine Swynford. Apparently, much of the British royal family came through their lineage. I enjoyed learning the history and culture of this time period (14th century), but felt that Seton's desire to include so much of it got in the way of a moving plot line. All the long descriptions made the story drag continually. It did peak my interest to know how much of the story was true, and Seton did a great job of sticking to the facts. It was an interesting love affair, with a satisfying conclusion, just too long.
