really liked it

I tend to like books that go from present to past and back again; this is one of those books (interestingly, I don't like purely historical fiction). This goes from the present in Scotland to the attempt in 1708 for Jacobites to return King James to Scotland (a time that I know nothing...really NOTHING...about). The main character in the present time is a fiction writer who writes a new novel in her sleep (basically) while trying to figure out which of the two sons of her landlord is the right one for her (yeah, it gets a little too romancy for me, but you might like that). There's sort of an interesting philosophical/scientific premise (are memories inherited?) although if I was writing a book in my sleep (basically) I'd spend a lot more time thinking about why that was happening.

Anyway. Didn't mind it, and for a 500+ page book it went pretty quickly.
