I started out reading this to my two daughters (ages 7 & 9) but they soon lost interest and so I finished it by myself. I think that they would've had more interest in it if we hadn't just finished reading The Wind and the Willows prior to this one. A person can only stand so many old fashioned books written from the animal's point of view.

I thought the story was kind of cute. It's basically Animal Farm written for children.

I love the illustrations. Robert Lawson's pen and ink drawings are warm and inviting.
