it was amazing
bookshelves: fiction
Read from March 16 to 24, 2011

I was kind of dreading this book, given the horrifying subject, but it's the choice of my book club this month. I'm completely won over. To begin with, I found the author's treatment of the subject graceful and fascinating. I think that's because the book is not about the sick psyche of the perpetrator, but about the coping strategies of the victims. The narrative voice is like nothing I've ever read. I'm usually annoyed by child narrators, but not this one. He's not wise beyond his years or ridiculously precocious. Somehow Ms. Donohue is able to get inside the head of a normal 5 year old boy and let us hear his thoughts and perceptions. Amazing. This book is really something out of the ordinary.
