it was amazing
bookshelves: all-time-favorites

Above all, Irving is a great story teller and a superb creator of complex characters who are at once noble and savage, and oh, so real. I read Garp for the first time when my son was a toddler. I know this sounds sappy, but I didn't totally understand the all-encompassing parent-child bond until I read Garp and wept and mourned for days over the death of Garp's son. It affected me that much. The story and characters were so real, so touching, that having read the book made me view the world and my own parent-child relationship differently. To me, that is the sign of a great work of art. I've read it two more times since then, and each time am affected in a very personal and powerful way.
