An enjoyable comfort read. This is the second book that I read by Joanne Harris. She becomes one of my favorite authors because of her dreamy quality of her prose. She always does a good job describing the settings of her story, which makes me want to be transported to the place where her story takes place. "Blackberry Wine" is known as one of Joanne Harris' "food trilogy" that she wrote aside of "Five Quarters of the Orange", which I absolutely love, and "Chocolat", her bestseller, which was made into an Oscar-nominated movie starring Johnny Depp & Juliette Binoche in 2000. Blackberry wine is much lighter compared to the other two. Very easy reading but still enjoyable for me. The simple story did not really pick up until the very end. Reading her book makes me appreciate food and nature even more. From her writing, I can tell how she values the beauty of nature and simple living. Her description of rural France and England is perhaps inspired by her childhood memories.
In Chocolat, the characters take comfort by baking and making chocolates, while in Five Quarters of the Orange, the characters take comfort by fishing and cooking. In Blackberry Wine, farming and gardening become the main element of the story.
