it was ok

I like to read Mercedes Lackey as a palate-cleanser between longer and/or more challenging books, and thus it was both disappointing and a bit disturbing that this one left a bad taste in my mouth.

I accept the need to address the socioeconomic and political conditions under which women have lived to make a book's setting accurate. But to make the curse on which the entire plot a punishment of women for their reactions to those conditions seems unnecessarily cruel. The book follows the plot of Swan Lake closely, adding to the characters and plot, but the original touch of the reason for the curse makes the book in many places an unpleasant read.

It's unfortunate, because there were some characters and subplots I found enjoyable. I'm glad that this is not the first ML book I've read, because I doubt I would have read another, and I would have missed out on some reading I've quite enjoyed.
