Blood and Circuses by Kerry Greenwood is book 6 of the Phryne Fisher mystery series set in 1928 Melbourne, Australia. Phryne's life is running smoothly, so of course she is bored. Her gypsy friends beg her to join a traveling circus (undercover) to investigate incidents of sabotage. One of the circus performers is murdered in a boarding house. The woman arrested for the crime has a prison record, so most of the police are convinced she did it. Only a rookie constable believes in her innocence. Meanwhile in Melbourne, two rival crime gangs are stepping up violence. Prisoners escape, gangsters get shot. Coincidence? Phryne has to shed all her luxuries to live incognito with the circus trick riders. She learns to kneel, then stand on a horse's back as it moves around the ring. She makes a new romantic conquest, and oh yes, figures out how all the crimes tie together. Exciting and entertaining; my favorite Phryne book so far.
