really liked it
bookshelves: have-read

The reason no one really reads this Austen novel is because it's a spoof of the Gothic novels of her day. This book is a blast if you've read "Mysteries of Udolpho" or "Castle of Otranto" or "Romance of the Forest." If you've read even one of those then you'll love Catherine...the very plain heroine of this romance novel.

Heck, even if you've read contemporary romance novels, you'll understand some of the fun being poked at Austen's peers. But it's more fun when you read the melodramatic bits of Gothic romance before you pick this one up. Then you'll truly recognize Austen's genius.
