This is an adult book that would appeal to teens. The description of the girls rape and murder are a bit intense, but after that the book is emotional rather than graphic. Even the actual rape and murder is more raw than graphic.

At times, I found the book a bit too sentimental, but that's just me. Most of the time it avoids sentimentality and focuses on the raw emotions of the individuals dealing with this gruesome tragedy and trying to move on (even the girl who was murdered.) It is sharp and poignant with little action.
