This is a continuation of the previous novel (A Man of Some Repute) and a novella. A new earl of Selchester has been discovered, the son of a hitherto unknown first marriage of the former, murdered earl. He comes from America with his two daughters to live in the castle and take responsibility for the lands and riches.

The displaced Lady Sonia no longer inherits a great deal of money to add to her considerable fortunes and her nose is out of joint. She appears to know a little more about her father's blackmailing schemes and illegal activities than she previously revealed. On Christmas Eve, she comes to the castle with a man to evaluate some art her father left her, mysteriously left off the inventories, and her bogus fiance.

In the meantime, Hugo and his sister who are lodging at the castle are making a vain attempt to find other lodgings. His work leads him to uncover some other odd goings-on. And then one of the guests dies.

Off we go into another mystery adventure and comedy of manners.

I like this series. I care about the characters. These books are not stand-alone and reading them in order is important. As mysteries, some things were a little obvious, but it was an enjoyable ride to the conclusion. The gabby, gossipy town of Selchester is a delight. If you are going to murder someone, don't do it there. Everyone will talk about it and ask questions until there are no secrets left.

What saddens me (on a couple of levels) is that the author died in January and so another book in the series will probably not appear. There are some unanswered questions and a couple of people who really want killing. Resolution will now be up to the readers' imaginations.
