The story of Alek and Deryn continues in this alternative history, steampunk series. It is right at the beginning of World War I and there are German plots, acts of sabotage, secret agents and revolutionaries swirling around in the exotic city of Istanbul.

As in the last book, there are lots of steampunk style machines and a few Darwinist fabricated (genetically engineered) beasties. There are some very cool chase and battle scenes involving mechanical walkers. The Tesla canon / lightning generator was very cool.

I really enjoy his afterword that gives a short synopsis differentiating between the actual historical events and the made up ones.
