really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, young-adult, newbery-award, 2011

It took me a while to get into the story, but I’m glad I stuck it out.

When we meet Gen (short for Eugenides) he is a bragging, dirty, imprisoned thief. The King’s magus recruits him to steal Hamiathes’ Gift, a stone which confers immortality. Throughout the book, the reader is drawn into the plot to retrieve the stone, and grows to admire and respect Gen—just as the magus grows to admire and respect him.

The ending is brilliant (no spoilers here). I’m looking forward to reading the sequels.
