This is a great translation of a brilliant book. To the contemporary reader, it's a little structurally disjointed and the ending comes up too fast (hence my personal rating) but that doesn't diminish the genius. The characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza simply shine from the pages. This is not just a classic book, it is a hilarious one.

The translation of this book is also excellent. Tobias Smollett allowed his own sense of humor to inform and enrich the book and he takes a mischievous delight in pointing out Cervantes's occasional errors. What I read of the supplementary text (notes, intro, biography of Cervantes, etc.) was well done, informative and to a certain extent, necessary. Cervantes wrote for his time, as every writer should, and since several hundred years have passed, a little assistance with background and history is not unwelcome.
