This would have been 3 1/2 stars.

The second half of the book was beautiful. The journey of a woman attempting to hold everything together in the aftermath of violent tragedy. Her definitions of life changing each day. It was pure, emotional and utterly touching.

However, the first half of the book focused on the daily routines of family. Though necessary, there were many disappointments for me. The ambivalent parenting, unfriendly friends and general lack of involvement in life for many adults described in the first several chapters was frustrating. I couldn't relate to people who were so disconnected. I suffered through those pages and almost stopped reading. It would have been a shame to miss out on the amazing second half.

This was a Goodreads first reads book.
