Arithmetic -- funny choice of words, because I think of this book, in retrospect, as a bit of programming. I was introduced to it in exactly the kind of setting it was no doubt intended for -- in 6th grade reading class, as one of several books that were part of our 'ten minutes a day' reading aloud that year. And the stereotypically bored, disrespectful narrator, who Learns Her Lesson, is both pitch perfect for a classroom of middle schoolers, and, for once, validated, because who WOULDN'T undergo a radical change in outlook after experiencing the Holocaust.

An important book for providing an introduction to some heavy material in a way that isn't anything spectacular but unquestionably effective for the age cohort.
