The plot was plodding and several times I wanted to shake the main character in frustration. She does some things I think are pretty stupid, and the author (in my opinion) doesn't adequately motivate her to make those stupid decisions.

What I liked, and what kept me reading, were two things - first, the status of women and the utter horror of living a life in which you are chattel. The book looks at several relationships, marital, love and friendship, and comes down strongly on the side of women taking care of each other in friendship as one of the most reliable relationships. I found that interesting - and believable. Second, I loved the descriptions of the gowns the main character created and executed, and I loved the cliff-hanging beginning of her atelier, which I felt was also believable.

Sadly, although I just finished this book, I think it is telling that I cannot even remember the main character's name.
