really liked it

Really eye-opening memoir. I felt like I must be reading about some imaginary, futuristic, horrifying society a la "The Giver" or "The Alliance" (cool old Gerald Lund book). I've known vaguely that China's government was overbearing---communistic, obviously. But I'd never imagined the details of their "cultural revolution"---the brainwashing, the bullying, the injustices. It's hard to say "This was a great book!" or "I really liked it" when it's not the kind of material that's likable. But I highly recommend this for anyone middle-school-aged and up. Good to have a little reminder now and then of how ridiculously lucky we are to live where and when we do.
