Children's book (late grade school) that tells the story of Rhoda, a young Jewish teen who had been raised primarily by her grandmother in Cyprus. Upon her grandmother's death she is sent to join her mother, brother, and Uncle in Jerusalem. She is shocked to discover them to be not at all as she remembered them. They have given up all their riches and fine living and have joined a cult (early Christianity).

The son of the High Priest solicits Rhoda's hand in marriage and with great reluctance her Uncle allows it because Rhoda desires it very much. The young girl is anxious to return to the sort of life she was accustomed to living.

In the course of the long engagement however, she learns to appreciate the life her family has chosen and realizes that she cannot marry her fiance after all, but to break off an engagement is not possible...
