George Pelecanos wrote for 'The Wire' and it shows in his novels. Similar setting, except Washington, DC, instead of Baltimore. A wide range of characters -- all treated with respect; even the bad guys have back stories that elicit some sympathy. Excellent dialog. But his novels seem to have a similar pattern: slow start (you start thinking is anything actually going to happen) as he builds his characters, then impending doom as you begin to see what's likely to happen (and at this point it's hard to put the books down) but finally, deflation. His endings are always sort of a let down; no catharsis. Just ending. Maybe because he likes his characters too much to let anything bad happen to any of them. That said.... I'll surely read the next Pelecanos I see.
