Do not confuse the novel with the toothless populist musical. The novel is an amazing political and social allegory, that people have otherwise glossed over in favor of the fairytale setting. I only wish that this novel could inspire a generation of subversives. Has possibly one of the most powerful metaphors for the persecution of gays and lesbians since the Star Trek: Next Gen episode about androgynous aliens.
