it was ok
bookshelves: 2016, film-tv-related, failure-to-launch, fantasy-sci-fi, nothing-special-here

As a whole, even for hardcore Star Wars fans, this is almost not worth reading. It's dull, the writing is about what you might expect from a writer of vacuum cleaner adverts in catalogs turned fiction writer, and you really don't get much depth of characterization beyond that of a kiddie pool. The saving grace is Poe's story, otherwise this would definitely be a one star peasant festival with no reason for reading.

Finn

This was so boring. Basically, Finn is an exemplary Stormtrooper, until he starts to have, what are they called?? independent thoughts and also feelings. Phasma takes note. There's a lot of training sequences. Maybe if it felt like it was actually Finn, this wouldn't have been so bad, but it doesn't. At best, it feels like a cheap cardboard cutout imitation from an old Target soda display. It has none of Finn's personality nor vivacity, even inwardly, towards anything. Boooooooo.

Rey

Slightly better than Finn's, but, again, the major downfall was that "Rey" didn't sound or feel like Rey. Nothing this Rey did was necessarily unlike Rey, but it didn't seem like her. Which is a pity, because I would read about Rey scavenging and making friends who betray her, and running flight simulations for hours, if like came across as Rey.

Poe

This was by far the best of the bunch. Not only did the story and writing feel more Poe-like than the other sections did their characters, but we got some actual backstory (which I totally understand why we couldn't that with Finn and Rey, but it doesn't make it any less excellent to have) and it led in beautifully into The Force Awakens.

Miss Clark Well, at least the Poe story will be worth reading. Even if the other two are a loss.
