How does one rate a classic?! I came close to giving this 3*, but GR says that means "I like It", and I can't in all honesty say that.
It is obvious that Herman Melville knew his whales, and knew a lot about whaling - but this volume on the details of that industry gave me many more details about it than I cared for, although I will admit that the passage about the shark feeding-frenzy over the dead whale was excellent, and I had some great mind-pictures about the sailors trying to beat them off. And I do 'get it' that whaling trips had to be tedious, with lots of time just searching for whales or at the mercy of the weather. It does have a humdinger of an ending!
