it was amazing
bookshelves: 19th-century, comedy-satire-farce, fiction, the-classics

** spoiler alert ** For years I didn't like Persuasion, finding it stiff and difficult to read. But through the years Persuasion's maturity has grown on me, as have its richly-drawn characters and its more subtle humour. Anne's renewed romance with the Captain is played delicately, like a well-bred cat with the finest of French mice [and it is hard to tell which is the feline and which rodent:]; the moves are delicate pawprints and sidesteps and the mousehole only gained after difficult political maneuvering.

I have no idea why I compared Anne and Captain Wentworth's romance to a cat and mouse game but I enjoyed doing so, even if the metaphor is a bad one!
