Scalzi has a very original idea in this novela. Instead of being run by science, the spaceships and technology in this universe are run by faith. Need to see a 3-D map of your current area of space, some of the bridge crew pray, and the map appears. The story was strange, different from most other things Scalzi has written. There is none of his typical humor in this story. In fact, it's dark and ends rather grimly. This story does not take place in the Old Mans War universe.
