really liked it

A rather solid coming of age fantasy fiction that treads a few common ground with a lot of other YA series but offers just that right amount of grittiness to differentiate and elevate it

Fantasy Faction said it right when they reviewed the book and said (paraphrased) - a bit like Harry Potter except everyone is a blood thirsty sociopath, including the instructors. I think that hooked me more than anything in getting this book on my tbr and its just what was promised except for magic school, this is an assassin's school and only 4 students graduate

Given all that, this is primarily a tale of revenge. Kristoff's previous series, The Lotus War was a fascinating steam-punk mashup of Japanese culture featuring a female lead, a story that morphs into revenge and empire toppling. In this book, he gets into those straight away

I admit it took me sometime to actually get into the book. Not because its badly written but the start was a bit patchy and took me almot 2 months to get through the 1st 20% despite being intriguing and took me just 2 days to finish the rest

The lead character is definitely kick-ass. A bundle of contradictions, driven with revenge in her heart and yet, not fully turned dark, she understands the gravity of her situation, the dark power that she barely has control of and yet displays those characteristics that may not make her a fit, until she reveals what she is

The supporting characters are well etched as well and each of the instructors are different from one another, even if they remains Grade A jerks and heartless killers. The setting and location kind of remind one of Italy and yet remains different.

Homicidal deadly fun, cant wait to see the body count ratchet up further as Mia's powers grow along with her shadowy companions and as she begins to understand herself
