The Cracked Spine (Scottish Bookshop Mystery, #1)
The best thing about this book is the location (Edinburgh, Scotland). Unfortunately the rest is disjointed and implausible, sometimes bordering on the ridiculous. Characters act without reasonable motivation and concepts are introduced—the protagonist's ability to "hear" books, a building with an eerie quietness, a ring of rare artifact buyers, a ghost—which are not developed sufficiently to account for how they are presented in the story. Readers who like loose ends tied up, or at least adequately explained, should give this one a pass.
