This is the story of a chinese orphan, Sam, and runaway slave, Andy, on the run from the law in the wild west. The girls are in their teens, but manage to disguise themselves as boys and join up with two cousins and their Mexican friend. This was a great story of adventure, but what really stands out is the relationship that develops between the girls, both outsiders and both distrustful of other people. The secondary characters were also well developed, although I felt the villians were a bit one dimensional.

I used to think that I didn't like westerns --- maybe it was just seeing too many Louis L'Amour books laying around my grandparents house. I think I that I must re-think my stand because I've really enjoyed True Grit (bookclub selection), The Sisters Brothers (read for a challenge) and now this one which was the FYA bookclub selection for January. This is a YA story, so there was some predictability in the romance department, but overall it was a great read. Now it's time for me to ride off into the sunset with a copy of Lonesome Dove in my back pocket. :-D
