it was ok
bookshelves: contemporary-literature

I wrestled with my "2 Stars" rating but I think I'm going to leave it as is, because this book really was just "OK". The main problem for me is that I couldn't connect with any of the characters and thus couldn't really care that much about them. The sense of isolation, both geographical and personal, is oppressive; no one seems capable of sustained, meaningful interaction with anyone else, throughout the book. A large portion of the novel is devoted to the ways in which each person withdraws from the others, and the few tentative overtures made at the end feel inadequate and forced. Nor is there much insight offered by the author as to why her characters are so emotionally restricted and unable to relate to eachother. There's no feeling; everything is muted and watery. The self-discovery journey of an intersex child growing up in remote Labrador should be more intense, I think. Instead, to misuse a quote from Gertrude Stein, "there is no there there."
