Moderately disappointing sequel to one of my favorite books of last year, A Darker Shade of Magic. Longer and more deliberately paced than its predecessor, A Gathering of Shadows finds Kell and Lila (eventually) thrown back into each other's paths when they both enter Red London's big Pro Bending tournament under false pretenses. The book gets off to a great start, especially with the passages of Lila's adventures on the high seas, and the climax delivers the goods. But the muddle in between... it just took me too long to get through as my interest wavered. I started and finished four other books while I trudged through this one. Pretty good book, not good enough for a better rec.

Andy Interpersonal growth issues always cause me a head-wall-beating and this had some of those which slow me down. I thought mostly the pacing was pretty on as I really couldn't put it down. I also thought that some of Lila's actions in the book, and the complete lack of fallout from them was a weird missing bit. Pretty good world(s) all around though. Curious how it will all resolve.

Gary Yes, I am anticipating the last book as well.
