Jean Smith a fellow teacher who frequently recommends books to me suggested this one. She's a history teacher and knew I was researching Civil War maerial at the time. I was pleased she did; the book turned out to be powerful, moving and very well written. The feel of an authentic voice holds the reader in the story. Excellent read.

Lynn Doiron The star on the front cover, the badge of some award or other (Nat'l Book Award, maybe?) was my reason for buying Cold Mountain. The movie hadn't even been mentioned at the time; I just tend toward award-winning books, hopeful that whatever committee or person that has a say in who gets the big gold badges of success also may have some of my same reading tastes.

Unfortunately, Cold Mountain was one of those books that I could put down after a few dozen pages. Equally unfortunate is that things set down in my place rarely get found and picked back up again. Not to say the book doesn't have tremendous merit, just to say that I am sloppy in my habits . . .
