I read this book in one day, mostly over the course of jury duty. I definitely want to re-read it to savor the details, but I have to say that this book was absolutely wonderful! I've always been intrigued by circus life and this was certainly an education in the lesser-known circuses during the Depression. The author's experimentation with split storytelling worked well, her characters were interesting and had many depths, and--my most favorite thing--her descriptions of animal behavior were fantastic and nuanced. I felt like I was right there, engaged in human relationships with Rosie the Elephant, Queenie the Jack Russell Terrier, and Bobo the Chimp. Makes me want to run off with the menagerie...
