Yet another review:
Well I feel like I've rewritten/updated my review of this like a billion times at this point, but I'm here to do it again. I re-read this over the span of the past two days when I had to take two super-long bus trips. This was the third time I've read the whole thing, I'm pretty sure (kind of the fourth time I guess, since I read a lot of it out loud to my younger siblings last year). There are few books that I loved when I was 12 that I still deeply love now, and this is one of those few books. In fact, the more times I read it the more I fall in love with it. I adore the series as a whole and think it develops so wonderfully as it goes along, and sometimes I almost forget how great the first book is. Maybe it's not the strongest of the series, but it's still fantastic. It's exciting, it's hilarious, there are so many lovable characters and great character development/backstories/etc. and as a giant mythology nerd I love how all the Greek myths are tied in and modernized. The rest of the series just gets better and better, and I love the Heroes of Olympus series as well––and it always makes me happy to go back to where it all started, and remember why I first fell in love with this book/series nine years ago. (Gosh that makes me feel old.)

hi bridgid.. is persy jackson somehow similar to city of glass? Or is it pure adventure?A little romance? thx!:)
I hate to barge into this conversation(: but..I agree that the casting is HORRIBLE. And I think that they might be combining all 5 books into one movie..?

It's more G-rated. There is romance, but it's pretty subtle. You should read them though, they're great. ;)

Yeah, not so happy about the casting. O_o I'm seeing the movie on Friday! *eep!*
Hmm I'm confused about that, too. Since all the actors are already like over 18 years old, I don't see how they can make all five movies before everyone in it is, like, 30. I have no idea. :P
Yeah, they're all supposed to be high-schoolers in the movie … which is just totally wrong. >_< gaaahhh
Me and a few of my friends are making orange Camp Half-Blood T-shirts. I'm excited, because it's finally a movie, but not excited because it's going to be upsetting.
*sigh* I know, I feel the same way. On one hand I am totally psyched because it's PERCY JACKSON!! AAHHHHH!!! Then on the other hand I know it's going to be totally wrong. O_O gaaahhh
I saw the movie today, and I don't want to ruin it for anybody but I feel like i might have to go on a big long rant.
Im telling you., You might now want to watch the movie. It was way different from the book. The screenplay is plain horrible. It just messed up Rick Riordan's story.
I loved the book, but the movie just made me want to scream. They did the story all wrong and the characters are way off. The monsters were cool, but the rest was just, well bad.
Do you suggest I read the whole series before seeing the movie so I don't spoil the rest of the books? Or should I just read the lightning thief? I will read the rest of the books anyways, but do I have to read all the books before seeing the movie? PLEASE answer soon!-Eryn
I must say that I totally agree with you.The film SUCKS!!!Compared to the book...I was so dissapointed watching it,I thought that because Criss Collumbo(Harry Potter 1,2)dirrected it,that it would be film that follows the book and all of the details...but they changed everything, they didn't even sticked to the main ploth...Kronos...not to mention the omission of Clarisse and others...The invisible hat of Annabeth's...I thin they ommited it cuz,of too much resemblance to Harry Potter...the invisibility...And what's with Hades coming from fire at camp, his clothing....I'm so dissapointed...The film should have been much better....=_=
I really like this book too. Haven't read the rest of the series yet, but I'm planning on it. But... I actually liked the movie! I mean, I know they changed a ton of things and everything, but I just like it as a movie. I mean, I don't like it as an adaptation of this book, I like it as a totally different thing. Get what I mean?
I think I understand your prospective, I believe if I wasn't a little biased from the book I would have loved the movie. If you don't think of it as a reproduction of the book, it was a good movie. I really did like the movie as a movie not a replication of the book.
Lia wrote: "I think I understand your prospective, I believe if I wasn't a little biased from the book I would have loved the movie. If you don't think of it as a reproduction of the book, it was a good movie...."Yeah, that's exactly what I was trying to say.
This book is beast Brigitte! I love the gods, the mysteries and even the monsters and how they were all wraped into a puzzling adventure storrie!
Lia wrote: "You only need to read The Lightning Thief, because that's the only book it covers."… And it doesn't even cover The Lightning Thief, really. Because it changes the entire plot. Like, it doesn't even stick to minor details. *sigh*
I agree with you on everything, Brigid. I went to the movie with extremely low expectations... and I was still disappointed. My friend and I decided we're murdering Chris Columbus in his sleep. ;D
I'm sorry to say this but I watched the movie (after reading the book) and thought it was still pretty good. Although it might be because Logan Lerman was in it ;), but I do agree that the casting of others were off. Annabeth looked a bit too old and was supposed to have gray eyes and blond hair, not green eyes and reddish hair 0.O and some parts of the book would have been interesting to see in the movie. Unfortunately they changed the entire book to a very different movie. Although I'm obsessed with the series whether it the book or movie. ^-^

i counted on how many things were way different from the book and i got 20 in the first 26 min. isn't it sad. i didn't like the movie. its my favorite book though. a lot of people are saying "Oh i hate it cuz it's a total knock off of harry poter" well no it isn't P.J. is different in its own special way. it's more modern than hocus pocus harry poter no offense. but i think that they are both still good books. cant wait for the second Kane Chronicles and The Lost Hero
Exactly! The thing is, the movie tried too hard to be like Harry Potter which is why people think Percy Jackson is just a rip-off … which is sad. Yes, there are similarities but it's definitely not a rip-off. It's a terrific series. I was very disappointed in the movie, too. :( Kane Chronicles and The Lost Hero are also great! :D
I totaly agree. This is one of my favorite series, it's so funny and each book is diffrent. I love the mortal instrument series too fyi!!!!!!!!!!
I AGREE COMPLETELY! Plus I lub MI!
I saw the movie a couple of days ago and I thought it was pretty good, however the books will ALWAYS be better than the movies; even the HP books are better than the movies (no disrespect)
I think the HP movies are pretty good in terms of following what happens in the books, though. No, they're not as good as the books, but at least they follow the plot. What ticked me off most about the movie of The Lightning Thief was that it disregarded the book almost entirely. To start with the characters weren't even the right age ... which wasn't a big problem, I guess. But then there were much more important things that were left out––like, you know, the main villain and the prophecy and all that stuff. They didn't even explain the Mist, and that just took away from the logic of the whole thing entirely. I could go on and on, but I'll just stop myself there. :P
I don't think the book is always better than the movie, although that usually tends to be true. I don't mind if the movie adaptation changes things, so long as it still captures the basic essence of the book. With The Lightning Thief, though, it felt like someone was told the basic premise and then they wrote an entirely new story that had nothing to do with Riordan's creation.
Don't even see the first movie. Haven't you heard the abd reviews? It's not just even the movie in general. It's the fact that they left stuff out/added stuff and didn't pick the right characters! Percy's supposed to be 12 not 18! And Annabeth has to be Blonde!
