Excellent analysis of Syria's experience of the Arab Spring and the resulting civil war. Hokayem has produced a dense book worthy of his think tank background. Just what I was looking for to learn more about the war, though I would not advise this being the first book you read about Syria. He breezes over most of the general history, so you might want to read something like Syria: A History of the Last Hundred Years to have the general historical framework in mind.

It is too bad this only covers to just before ISIS is on the scene, but it is a good historical work. There are enough books about ISIS that you can read to follow this book and you will have a pretty good picture.
