it was ok
Read from February 14 to 22, 2011

I was somewhat disappointed by "Room". I found it unbelievable even though it seemed to be pulled right from today's headlines. The story told from the viewpoint of the five year old was where credibility was lost for me. No matter how intelligent this five year old may have been, under the circumstances, some of the vocabulary he used seemed entirely unrealistic. One moment his speech would be almost that of a toddler and then the next minute a four syllable word would come out of his mouth. The characters also showed far less emotion than I would have expected. The whole story became anticlimatic after the escape and seemed to drag along to a fairly predictable end. Not a bad read, but not the best.

Shani Be interested to see what you think of this. I read the first chapter but couldn't agree to myself to read more. It was too intense for me.

Lisa You know, I don't really find it so intense. I just don't think it's particularly well written. It's supposed to be written from the standpoint of a 5 year old child, but I find it pretty unrealistic in that regard. No 5 year old I've ever met thinks/speaks like this one. I'm not finished, and may change my mind later on. Still up in the air at this point.

Karen Hmmm...I think I may take it off my TBR list then. I already thought the subject matter was going to get to me.

Lisa The subject matter is really not that difficult to read. It doesn't delve that deep - not overly traumatic. I just don't think it is particularly well written. You might disagree if you gave it a try. Just not what I was expecting.
