really liked it
bookshelves: fiction-general

A pleasure to read. Byatt paints an engrossing picture of an age when art and politics seemed promisingly intertwined (for a while) and the atmosphere of beauty tinged with fear that went along with it. The plot and characters are compelling and made me eager to keep reading. And there's enough substance behind the melodrama that you never forget how serious the stakes really were behind all that pretty pottery and idyllic childhood whimsy.
