it was amazing
bookshelves: non-fiction, politics, history, indonesia

Ever since first setting foot in Indonesia over ten years ago (and returning many times since) I have been fascinated by it. Pisani does an excellent job showing the mind-boggling contradictions that make the country so beguiling. Even though I've traveled quite a bit and have the luxury of counting locals among my family I learned an amazing amount about the country's history and why things are the way they are. It's all written in a hugely entertaining manner, clear eyed and unsentimental, but with a warm touch. Having just finished it, I am left with an overwhelming urge to travel there again myself and keep exploring this truly unique and improbable country.
