really liked it
bookshelves: adventure, coming-of-age, english, girl-hero, historical, series, tween, teen

I finally got around to reading the first book in the Bloody Jack series, and I just wish I'd started sooner. Great story about a girl who loses her family and friends due to 18th century illness and poverty, and who decides she's going to sail the world. Disguising herself as a boy is not easy, especially as puberty creeps in, but Jacky does her best to be a good ship's boy on the HMS Dolphin, and has some page-turning adventures along the way. This is good prep for reading Master and Commander, I believe, which I'll tackle later this year.
