What a refreshing story about a young couple whose love endures through tragedy, idiocy and against odds that would break apart most families.
Bud and Florine are just twenty when they get married and have their first child shortly thereafter. Although their friends and families are thrilled by this union, and help show that it definitely takes a village to not only raise a child, but support a young marriage. Florine has lived a lifetime before she even has her first child, with her own mother having gone missing when Florine was quite young, and her father having died of a broken heart just a few years after. Florine and Bud grew up as neighbors on a small beachy Point in Maine where only a few houses and a general store inhabit a beautiful little neighborhood. All the neighbors seem consider each other family and don't hesitate to walk into each others' homes and help without anyone even having to ask.
Shortly after their first child is born, another one comes along and Bud wants to move a few hours away for a better paying mechanic job, while Florine wants to stay at the Point where she enjoys the friendship and support of the cast of characters who live there. Bud quickly develops a drinking problem, similar to the one that killed his father, and Florine must decide if she and the kids can live with him or if she must move on without him. Although Bud and Florine don't have a lot, they have each other and it seems like that's all they need. With a large group of characters that are all developed pretty well, this love story is heart-warming and just what this world needs when everyone else seems so quick to throw a relationship away when it gets the least bit rough. I'm thankful to have won this book via First Reads.
