this author is brilliant for writing the most whimsical, creative and magical stories using the dense language of the staid, stuffy, reserved, class-laden 18th century british. the oddness of this combination made me laugh out loud more than once. i wanted this collection to be as good as 'jonathan strange' but was disappointed, mainly because it wasn't long enough. of the eight stories, a few are exquisite. but a couple are just bleh. hopefully ms clarke was just clearing out the shelf and is hard at work on her next masterpiece.
