it was ok
bookshelves: fantasy, gunpowder, magical, war, old-fashioned
read count: 1

After having this book recommended to me by an online friend, I was looking forward to reading it so had a lot of patience set aside for when I read it.

I can't say I hated it... I just didn't care for it much. I managed to get from beginning to end of this huge publication, but felt slightly disappointed with it because I had not found what the friend had experienced.

It was too long and even though I welcomed the footnotes to a certain degree (I'm not a fan of them though), it just became a chore to read at points. The politics of the characters did not really interest me but I still ploughed on in the hope something would come to light.

Definitely a worth while read if you like old fashioned, almost Pratchett-esque, magic stories but it's not for me. Don't plan to pick up any other of Susanna's books either as a result.
