I've read a few other books by Lisa Gardner, and I think she's a good mystery/thriller author. Her stories always have a number of story lines, are fast paced, and suspenseful. This novel, set in Boston, involves number of murders of entire families and brings the police detective D.D. Warren (who I think is in other Gardner novels) to a pediatric psychology hospital ward. One of the nurses there also had her family murdered 25 years ago and she was the only survivor. Another story line includes a mother who has to chose between her mentally ill son and her husband and daughter, finds her life torn apart, then lives in fear of her son doing harm to her. All the stories converge in an unpredictable way keeping the reader guessing up until the end (at least this reader didn't quite figure it all out!). The descriptions of what families of young mentally ill children (in this story, 6-8 year olds) go through and have to deal with was an education for me. Those side stories stuck with me.
